Cynthia Wyeth Peterson Memorial Planetarium

The UConn Planetarium was built in 1954 by Provost Al Waugh. It is the oldest planetarium in Connecticut and is maintained in a semi-historic state for this reason. It has a 16 foot dome and previously housed a Spitz model A1 star and planet projector with several custom designed special effects projectors. Between January 2023 and September 2024, the planetarium underwent extensive renovations, including the installation of a new projector, new seating, and a surround sound system. The building has also been renamed in honor of Cynthia Peterson, who served as the planetarium’s director for 35 years. The old projector is currently on display near the Physics department main office in Gant South.

We’re excited to share that the planetarium officially reopened on November 1 and are currently running regular shows on Tuesday afternoons. These shows are open to the public and require a (free) ticket to attend. Signups are available at our Marketplace store: http://tiny.cc/uconn_planetarium

If you’re affiliated with a school or interested in organizing an educational event, we’d be happy to work with you to schedule a group outing. Please contact Matt Guthrie at guthrie@uconn.edu for more information.
