The UConn Planetarium was built in 1954 by Provost Al Waugh. It is the oldest planetarium in Connecticut and is maintained in a semi-historic state for this reason. It has a 16 foot dome and previously housed a Spitz model A1 star and planet projector with several custom designed special effects projectors. Between January 2023 and September 2024, the planetarium underwent extensive renovations, including the installation of a new projector, new seating, and a surround sound system. The building has also been renamed in honor of Cynthia Peterson, who served as the planetarium’s director for 35 years. The old projector is currently on display near the Physics department main office in Gant South.

We’re excited to share that the planetarium officially reopened on November 1. Regular public shows are set to begin in January 2025. In the meantime, we are conducting additional test shows and preparations to ensure an excellent experience for all future visitors.
