The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.
Dawn-IRES Scholars program
International Research Experience for Students
DAWN-IRES Scholars Program will grant students unique access to world class facilities such as the Hubble Space Telescope, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), and soon the James Webb Space Telescope. Joining the vibrant research atmosphere provided at the Niels Bohr Institute, students will be provided a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform research relevant to current open questions in astrophysics. DAWN scholars will join a cohort of 7 students to enjoy a stimulating 10-week science program set in Copenhagen, Denmark. Application should be up in December, with a February 1st deadline.

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 10 Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science laboratories and is operated by Stanford University on behalf of the DOE. Participants in the SLAC Summer Student Program can work up to twelve weeks from May until September, depending upon department needs and student school schedules. All students must be authorized to work in the U.S. and must pass a basic background check.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF) Awards support University of Connecticut full-time undergraduate students in summer research or creative projects.
SURF awards are available to students in all majors at all UConn campuses. SURF project proposals are reviewed by a faculty committee representing various Schools and Colleges, and SURF award recipients are chosen through a competitive process.
Lee Teng Undergraduate Internship

The Lee Teng undergraduate internship program provides a unique summer research experience for undergraduate students at the Junior level in the area of accelerator science and technology. The program is carried out jointly by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) and the US Particle Accelerator School (USPAS).

Brookhaven National Laboratory offers an undergraduate Mini Semester Program where students spend one week at BNL during the winter break and participate in a lab related research project. Many students who participate in the Mini-Semester program return to BNL as part of the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program.

Programs include the Summer Internships in Science and Technology (SIST), where undergraduate sophomores and juniors majoring in physics, engineering (mechanical, electrical and computer), materials science, mathematics and computer science conduct research with Fermilab scientists and engineers.

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. Requirements: US citizen or permanent resident; currently a graduating senior or first/second year graduate student.
PHYS 3989 Undergraduate Research and PHYS 4099 Independent Study
Independent studies (1-3 credits) are usually an undergraduate student’s first step in conducting research. Students should reach out to faculty members to discuss their interests, and make arrangements.
Mark Miller Award
The Mark Miller Award is a stipend to allow a student to remain in Storrs over the summer session to work on a research project with a Faculty member of the Physics Department.
Connor Occhialini 2019 Summer Research Award
A one-time $1000 reward for undergraduate research has been provided to the UConn Physics Department by the American Physical Society, in recognition of UConn Physics Department alum Connor Occialini (BS 2018), who was a finalist for the LeRoy Apker Award. This stipend will be awarded to a physics major undergraduate, to allow the student to remain in Storrs over the summer session to work on a research project with a Faculty member of the Physics Department.
